About SproutSync

Mission

To empower growers with accessible greenhouse technology that strengthens food sovereignty and supports resilient, thriving communities.

Vision

A future where food sovereignty is practical and achievable, and every community has the tools to cultivate resilience, identity, and nourishment across generations.

Values

  • Community First – Relationships guide everything we do.

  • Accessibility – Technology should serve everyone.

  • Sustainability – Food systems must be resilient and future-focused.

  • Innovation with Integrity – We merge modern engineering with cultural values and care for the land.

  • Collaboration – Growth happens together.

SproutSync Ltd. is an Indigenous-led greenhouse automation company dedicated to making food sovereignty practical and achievable. We design smart, accessible systems that simplify greenhouse growing — from automated watering to real-time monitoring — giving growers more time, confidence, and control. Our technology is built to meet people where they are, whether they’re running a backyard greenhouse or managing larger community projects, ensuring that innovation feels approachable, not intimidating.

At the heart of SproutSync is a belief that technology should serve people. Too often, advanced tools are designed for experts or corporations, leaving everyday growers behind. We take the opposite approach: our systems are simple, adaptable, and rooted in relationships. By blending engineering expertise with cultural values and care for the land, we help communities strengthen their resilience and grow food on their own terms.

Founded by the married couple Kendal Garlow and Thomas Sweeney, SproutSync brings together two complementary worlds: Indigenous food sovereignty research and engineering innovation. Kendal’s work in sustainable food systems and Thomas’ background in embedded systems engineering shape a vision where tradition and technology sync seamlessly. Together, they are building a company that doesn’t just automate greenhouses but empowers communities to thrive.

Who We Are

Kendal Garlow

Kendal is from the Mohawk Nation and the Wolf Clan of the Six Nations of the Grand River. She is currently pursuing her MA in Indigenous Studies, specializing in Indigenous Food Sovereignty Theories, where her research explores how food connects to identity, wellbeing, and community resilience. Her work draws from both academic study and her role as Nourish Project Lead with the Six Nations Department of Wellbeing, where she’s led initiatives that bring people together through food, health, and culture.

Throughout her academic journey, Kendal has focused on bridging research and community practice. From working on sustainable food systems to diving into the complex relationships between food and health, she has built a strong foundation in research, administration, and leadership. Her graduate studies allow her to bring fresh perspectives into ongoing community-driven food initiatives, while also contributing to broader conversations around Indigenous methodologies, sovereignty, and innovation.

At SproutSync, Kendal brings this same energy and vision to life. She believes food sovereignty should be practical and achievable — not just an idea, but a way of living that empowers communities. By pairing her academic insights with Thomas’s engineering expertise, she helps shape SproutSync into a space where technology is rooted in culture, relationships, and care.

While Kendal may be new to the tech industry, her passion for food and health innovation is anything but. She sees SproutSync as a way to sync modern solutions with traditional values, creating greenhouse technology that isn’t just smart — it’s meaningful. With her relational approach and love of big-picture thinking, Kendal is excited to grow SproutSync into a resource that uplifts growers and strengthens community resilience across generations.

Thomas Sweeney

Thomas Sweeney holds both a B.Eng. and M.Eng. in Electrical Engineering, specializing in embedded systems. Over the years, he’s applied his skills in everything from electric vehicles to solar-powered innovation to advanced computing systems. Through it all, one thing has been constant: Thomas is always thinking about food. Whether wandering farmers’ markets or testing out new recipes, his curiosity about how we grow, share, and enjoy food has shaped the way he approaches technology.

With roots in both Slovenia and Ireland, Thomas has a strong sense of how culture, tradition, and community come together around the table. That perspective now fuels his work at SproutSync, where he’s able to merge his lifelong love of food with his passion for engineering.

For Thomas, SproutSync is more than just a business — it’s the perfect fusion of who he is. He’s driven by the belief that technology should be for everybody: practical, approachable, and built to empower rather than overwhelm. By bringing his technical expertise into the world of growing, Thomas is creating tools that help people cultivate food with confidence and independence.

Working alongside Kendal, he’s excited to turn SproutSync into a bridge between innovation and community — a place where growers can rely on smart technology that still feels human, meaningful, and connected to the land.
